Lismore

Lismore FountainLismore is one of the most historic towns in County Waterford, with its impressive and imposing Castle and St. Carthage’s Cathedral, confirming its Christian past of almost fourteen hundred years. In 636 AD St. Carthage founded a monastery here and the town became a seat of learning which was renowned all over Europe. The Cathedral is a short walk from Lismore Castle the original part of which was built by the English Prince John in 1185 and added to in later centuries by the Earls of Cork and the Dukes of Devonshire. In 1589 the Bishop's Palace was leased, with its lands, to Sir Walter Raleigh.

Lismore is a Heritage Town which confirms its place as one of the premier tourist towns of the South East. The Heritage Centre houses an award winning audio-visual display. Among the exhibition galleries is a space dedicated to the life and works of Robert Boyle ‘The Father Of Modern Chemistry’, who was born in Lismore Castle in 1627. The town’s Millennium park, which includes innovative design features such as a gazebo, waterfall, smoke-house, fountain and obelisk is among its main attractions, as is the ever popular weekly farmers’ market.

In recent years the town has blossomed, providing a variety of quaint cafes and continental style bistros and restaurants.

The town’s ancient and respected heritage is complemented by the contemporary design of the Civic Buildings. Investment in civic and educational infrastructure is intended to drive forward the Lismore of the future as a “learning town”, which draws from its academic, scientific and civic past.
